Extend Super Visa Status / Stay / Record

When you arrive at the port of entry in Canada, a Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) Officer stamps your passport/travel document and records the date by which you must leave Canada. However, due to Covid-19, CBSA officers are not stamping passports, but they are entering your arrival date, time, and the duration of your entry granted into an electronic system. The officer also notes any terms and conditions related to your visit. There may be times you wish to extend your status or change the conditions of your visit. If you wish to extend your status date, we suggest that you should apply 30 days before your status expires in order to do any of the following:

  • Extend your visitor, student or worker status;
  • Change the type of permit you hold (for example, from a study permit to a work permit);
  • Change a condition of your permit (for example, if you are studying and you want to change schools, or if you are working and you want to change jobs etc.).

Extend Visitor Status / Stay / Record

Usually a visitor gets six months of stay in Canada. The CBSA officer mostly stamps the travel document/passport and writes the date underneath the stamp until when a visitor is allowed to stay in Canada. If a CBSA officer doubts the intentions of a visitor for various reasons (no return ticket, travel document expiring in the near future, no clear purpose of visit, unstable financial circumstances), he or she can grant status for less than six months.

You must apply to extend your visitor status in Canada as soon as possible. Generally a 30 day period before the expiry of status is recommended by IRRC.

Extend Super Visa Status / Stay / Record

If an applicant shows the required insurance document to the CBSA officer, he or she can stamp the travel document/passport and allow the person to stay in Canada for up to 24 months. The person that came on a super visa can stay in Canada for up to 24 months without the need for renewal of his or her status. If they want to continue staying in Canada without leaving the country for the extended period of another two years, they must apply for extension of the super visa. Even parents/grandparents who are in Canada as visitors for 6 months can apply for super visa extension if their sponsor meets the requirements. Generally a 30 day period is recommended by IRRC before the expiry of the current status.

Extend Study Permit Status / Stay / Record

When an applicant approaches port of entry in Canada, the CBSA officer examines his or her travel document/passport, an adhesive sticker, and permits the person to enter Canada. The CBSA officer stamps his or her travel document/passport and hands over a status document named as study permit. This documents entails the duration of his or her study permit. If an applicant wants to extend his or her permit to study in Canada, he or she will have to submit an application for extension of study permit. Generally a 30 day period is recommended by IRRC before the expiry of the status granted.

Extend Work Permit Status / Stay / Record

When an applicant approaches port of entry in Canada, the CBSA officer examines his or her travel document/passport, an adhesive sticker, and permits the person to enter Canada. The CBSA officer stamps his or her travel document/passport and hands over a status document named as work permit. This documents entails the duration of his or her work permit. If an applicant wants to extend his or her permit to work in Canada, he or she will have to submit an application for extension. Generally a 30 day period is recommended by IRRC before the expiry of the status granted.

Restoration Of Status

If a visitor, worker or student has lost their status, they may apply to reinstate or restore their status in accordance with R182 of IRPR. This regulation only applies if the temporary resident has not been out of status for more than 90 days, and they have not failed to comply with the specified conditions. Restoration of status cannot be granted at the POE. Individuals who have failed to comply with the conditions imposed under R185 need to apply in Canada for restoration of their status. If they leave Canada, they will be deemed to be seeking a new entry on their return. Once the application for restoration of status is submitted, you are allowed to remain in Canada but are not eligible to work or study. You can do so once you receive the approval on the application.
